My name is Justus van der Hoven, and I have spent much of my life behind the camera. Some of my earliest memories were caught on home movie camera by my dad. Looking back on this footage, I can’t help but think that the experience of rewatching videos plays a part in how memories are made.
I was fortunate to study a Postgraduate degree in Architecture in Oxford, where I was introduced to filmmaking by Andrew Holmes and David Green (founder of Archigram). For our very first project, we were asked to avoid making any traditional architectural drawings or designs, and instead focus on writing a script and making a storyboard for an architectural film. We studied film noir in depth, and learned the fundamentals of cinematography, story writing and editing. This is also where I was taught by prominent academic, Igea Troiani, who wrote a book titled Architecture Filmmaking (2020)
Today, I am an award-winning videographer and filmmaker. Last year, I won best short clip at the Archiboo Awards in London for a short film titled What If (2022), made for Sanofi on behalf of Tetris and JLL. Recently, I was asked to be a judge for the 2024 Archiboo Awards in the best short film category, where another one of my films was shortlisted as a finalist. During this judging, I was lucky enough to meet some of the top filmmakers and thought leaders in the architectural film industry.
